Matosinhos Challenge 1: How to promote environmental education in marginalized communities?
Educating marginalized communities about environmental issues is crucial for fostering sustainable behaviors and raising awareness of the importance of preserving our planet. Such education can contribute to improved quality of life and a healthier environment.
Thus, Matosinhos seeks for accessible educational applications leveraging AI to personalize content based on the user’s age, knowledge level, and interests. These tools should be designed with the community’s technological needs in mind, using clear and simple language for easy comprehension. Given limited access to high-speed internet, optimizing the applications for low data consumption and providing offline access is crucial. Interactive content, such as videos, games, and quizzes, along with local examples, can enhance engagement and relevance.
Community engagement campaigns can be effective, involving workshops and events that demonstrate sustainable practices. Engaging community leaders and incorporating cultural and traditional practices can enhance participation and impact. Collaborating with schools and NGOs can expand the reach of environmental education, while training local educators and creating extracurricular programs can ensure lasting impact.
The Municipality of Matosinhos is hosting one pilot in collaboration with its social housing communities.
