CommuniCity Journey: from challenge to implementation

What is the process followed within CommuniCity to achieve social impact?

From detecting challenges to the pilot implementation of solutions, this timeline highlights the key stages of the project.

Through collaboration and community engagement, the project seeks to address pressing urban issues while leveraging cutting-edge technology. Each step brings us closer to scalable solutions that contribute to sustainable, socially inclusive urban environments.

Step 1
Cities Express Interest & Formulate Challenges
CommuniCity’s responsible partners initiate outreach to municipalities, raising awareness about the project and inviting cities to participate. Interested cities identify key challenges facing their communities. CommuniCity then selects the most relevant challenges, ensuring they align with the project's objectives and priorities.
Step 1
Step 2
Challenges Are Made Public
Once the challenges are finalised, they are published on the CommuniCity website. This phase allows time for communication and promotion to reach potential technology providers, offering them an opportunity to assess and prepare for participation.
Step 2
Step 3
Open Call for Technology Providers
CommuniCity’s consortium partners (OASC, FVH) coordinate the open call, working closely with the cities of Amsterdam, Porto, and Helsinki. Technology providers, including for-profit companies, NGOs, and individuals, are invited to apply. Providers may submit solutions for multiple challenges, and those with a strong alignment with the project’s objectives are selected. Emphasis is given to the digital aspect and the co-creation with marginalised groups.
Step 3
Step 4
Selection of Pilot Teams
The cities and CommuniCity’s project partners review applications and select the pilot teams based on their potential to address the outlined challenges effectively. The selected teams will be tasked with implementing their proposed solutions in real-world settings.
Step 4
Step 5
Introduction to Tech-Focused Pilots with Social Impact
Before the pilot phase begins, the selected teams participate in training sessions to ensure a clear understanding of procedures and expectations. Topics covered include co-creation with marginalized communities, navigating the technical framework and pilot execution strategies.
Step 5
Step 6
Execution of Pilots
Pilot teams work to implement their innovative solutions over 6 months. During this phase, the pilot teams run their projects in collaboration with local communities, testing and refining their solutions. Mid-term reporting ensures progress is on track. The initial payment is completed after signing the piloting contract, following the kick-off meeting, supporting the teams as they navigate challenges and successes.
Step 6
Step 7
Finalization and Next Steps
At the end of the 6-month period, pilot teams submit detailed reports on their activities, outreach, and final outcomes. While CommuniCity does not provide additional funding beyond the pilot phase, teams are encouraged to pursue further opportunities to scale or develop their solutions through external funding sources.
